Overview: This dimension covers two aspects of wellness, financial and occupational. Financial is focused on financial literacy, building skills to promote response decisions. It covers your present and future needs. Balance in the area promotes planning to manage financial needs (such as paying for groceries, rent, loan payments, medical expenses) and allowing for personal wants as well (non-essential purchases). Occupational Wellness is focused on aligning your career path with your value/belief systems and job satisfaction.

What it means to engage in Occupational/Financial Wellness per the National Wellness Institute ¹:

"Occupational wellness follows these tenets:
• It is better to choose a career which is consistent with our personal values, interests, and beliefs than to select one that is unrewarding to us.
• It is better to develop functional, transferable skills through structured involvement opportunities than to remain inactive and uninvolved.¹"

When your financial/occupational wellness is balanced, you may experience:

- a reduction in debt
- decreased stress
- increased motivation
- an increase in achieving short / long term goals

Common misunderstandings associated with financial and occupational wellness:

Myth: If I have money in my bank account, I don't have to review my financial wellness

Truth: Although having income can be a form of financial wellness, it is up to the individual how much this contributes to wellness.

Myth: I'm too far into my classes for my degree, I can't consider changing roles now.

Truth: It is never too late to review your wants and needs. Considering your career and if it aligns with your current values is not a "bad" thing. How can I attend to my financial and occupational wellness?

- Track your current spending habits. Review to see if your spending is more than your income.
- Some banks offer free spending assessment tools through their online portal. This can assist in you understanding your spending habits and adjust as needed
- Review your budget before you go shopping. Make a list of your needs and encourage yourself to purchase those things before non-essential spending occurs.
